On Wednesday evening, May 1, 2013, Mayen Promotions in association with Zanfer Promotions and Azteca America are returning to Las Pulgas Nightclub in downtown Tijuana for their regular monthly show with 22 of the area’s top pugilists – four lovely ladies – 20 tough hombres.

In the evening’s Main Event, an eight rounder, they have super flyweight Joselyn “Princesa Tapatía” Arroyo (12-0-0, 4 KOs) from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico hoping to keep her unblemished record in tack when facing Karla “La Capo” Mora (1-1-1) from Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. At today’s weigh-in both ladies were right at the super flyweight limit of 115 lbs.

In the co-feature they have southpaw Leon “The Third Generation” Spinks (3-0-1, 2 KOs) of Huntington Beach, CA set to face Enriquez “Cid” Guzman (0-1) from Tijuana, B. C., Mexico. After fighting his first three bouts as a welterweight, Spinks’ trainer had him drop two weight classes to fight as a lightweight. For this contest, both Spinks and Guzman weighed in at 135 lbs.

Unlike Leon “Neon Leon” Spinks, his grandfather who defeated Muhammad Ali to win the heavyweight title, Spinks III has yet to face an opponent with a winning record. Here’s hoping Guzman can give him a run for his money.  In Guzman’s debut, back on November 30, 2012, he lost an unanimous decision to Miguel Mendieta.

Brandon Adams' last victory was also at Las Pulgas back on December 19, 2012 over Edgar Bojorquez.

You talk about star power, this young lady sure has it. Maureen Shea has worked in Hollywood and TV in New York.

You talk about star power, this young lady sure has it. Maureen Shea has worked on both coasts, in Hollywood and on TV in New York.

Light middleweight Brandon “Cannon” Adams (9-0-0, 5 KOs) of Los Angeles, CA is back and set to face Rafael “Rafa” Ortiz (8-6-2) of Mexicali, B. C., Mexico. Both boxers weighed in at 154 lbs. Note well: In three of Ortiz’s last four contests, he didn’t get past the second round.

The thirty-two year-old Maureen “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea (18-2-0, 11 KOs) from the Bronx, New York is visiting Tijuana with her trainer Hector Roca. At the weigh-in, she weighed 138 lbs. Her opponent Silvia “Dinamita” Zúñga (5-11-0, 1 KO) weighed 171 lbs. That’s quite a discrepancy.

Also, Shea stands 5’4” tall while Zúñga is 5’6”. Zúñga, who  comes from San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico, won her last match, an unanimous decision victory over the tough Denise Castro (5-0-1). Incidentally, Zúñga has never been this heavy. The most she ever weighed for a bout was 152 lbs.

In case you didn’t know it, Shea served as the sparring partner for actress Hillary Swank in preparation for her role as a boxer in the Academy Award winning film Million Dollar Baby. She’s been featured on the cover of sports magazines and at one time produced this sports segment called “Shea’s Corner” on local TV in New York.

It is one year, five months and 21 days since she last fought Diana Ayala at Estadio Centenario in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. With the difference in their skill levels, one can only imagine why Shea would come all the way from New York for this fight. Most likely: 1) she had Tijuana on her list of the most dreamy vacation sites, 2) she’s always wanted a peak inside the Tijuana jail or 3) she’s a good friend of Jackie Nava and wanted to come and see the new baby.

Speaking of the Nava clan, light welterweight Daniel Nava (5-0-1, 3 KOs) is set to face Carlos “Magico” Rivera (1-0-0, 1 KO) of Tijuana, B. C., Mexico. Both fighters weighed in at 134 lbs.

They’ll be fireworks in this one. Featherweight Rosalio “Aspid” Rios of Tijuana (6-0-0, 5 KOs) is scheduled to face Jose “Diablito” Escarcega (8-4-0, 5 KOs) of Rosarita. While Rios is on a five KO streak, his opponent has KO’d his last three opponents. Both fighters weighed in at exactly 124 lbs.

Unlike the Klitschko brothers, the Gutierrez clan of are ready and willing to fight anyone, even a distant relative. Middleweight Antonio Gutierrez (9-0-1, 7 KOs) is scheduled to face Hugo Gutierrez (0-1-1) on Wednesday evening. Antonio weighed in at 160 lbs. while Hugo, who’s still looking for his first victory, weighed in at 159 lbs.

Lightweight Jose Galvez (2-0-1, 2 KOs) is scheduled to face Miguel Aguirre who is making his pro-debut. Both boxers are from Tijuana and both weighed in at 131 lbs.

Welterweight Oscar Godoy (9-2-0, 4 KOs) is scheduled to face Alejandro “Iron Man” Alonso (2-15-2, 1 KO). Godoy weighed in at 146 lbs., Alonso 145. Godoy has been on a five bout winning streak ever since he was KO’d by Joshua “Superman” Marks back on January 27, 2012. The “Iron Man,” who is from Rosarito, B. C., Mexico, has now gone 11 fights without a victory. His last victory came on February 20, 2010.

Lightweights 25 year-old, 5’ 10” Jose Luis “Zurdo” Ramirez Jr. (1-0-1) a southpaw from Tijuana, B. C., Mexico weighing 134 lbs. versus Michelle Cañete 132 lbs. of Tijuana, B. C., Mexico making his pro debut. Back on September 29, 2011, Ramirez ended up in a split decision draw with Cesar Sanchez who at the time had a record of (0-6-2)

Jonathan Garcia (10-0-0, 8 KOs) of Watsonville, CA facing Ignacio Mondragon (0-14-1)

Jonathan Garcia (10-0-0, 8 KOs) of Watsonville, CA is facing Ignacio Mondragon (0-14-1) of Tijuana. Prediction: This one should be over in a hurry. Photo: Jim Wyatt

In the light welterweight division it’s 21 year-old Jonathan Garcia (10-0-0, 8 KOs) of Watsonville, CA facing Ignacio Mondragon (0-14-1) of Ensenada, B. C., Mexico. Both fighters weighed in at the same 140 lbs. Special note: Mondragon has not only lost 14 fights, he’s been knocked out 9 times. If Garcia doesn’t KO Mondragon, then he’s going to hear more than an earful on his long ride back home to Watsonville.

Heriberto “Tremendo” Delgado (5-0-0, 2 KOs) scheduled to face Bernardino Guevara (0-6-0).

What’s wrong with these numbers? Heriberto “Tremendo” Delgado (5-0-0, 2 KOs) scheduled to face Bernardino Guevara (0-6-0 with 0 KOs). Photo: Jim Wyatt

In a super bantamweight match, they have Heriberto “Tremendo” Delgado (5-0-0, 2 KOs) scheduled to face Bernardino Guevara (0-6-0). Weights unavailable. The wise guy money is on the early stoppage.
