Mercito Gesta matches Chris Martin’s win count

August 21, 2010 No Comments

And still undefeated, Mercito "No Mercy" Gesta has his arm raised in victory after winning his 19th straight bout.

At this time, San Diego has quite a few top boxing prospects to cheer for. On Friday evening, it was Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta’s turn to make San Diegans proud when he scored a seventh round knockout of Genaro Trazancos (22-12-1, 13 KO’s) at the Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona. Gesta, who is a southpaw, used a straight left hand to lay Trazancos out for the count. Time was :53 of the seventh.

With the win, Gesta matches super-bantamweight Chris Martin’s win total. Both Gesta of San Diego and Martin of Chula Vista have 19 wins without a defeat. Martin is planning to get win number 20 when he again headlines the boxing show at the Four Points by Sheraton in Kearny Mesa just off Aero Drive in San Diego on Friday, September 10th.

When asked later if Team Gesta had any interesting tidbits/comments about Friday’s win in Arizona, I received the following reply:

“Hey James, thanks for the email. Mercito did exactly what we planned…win the early rounds and then close the show. I feel good about Mercito’s performance. He lost focus a bit and got hit with a right hand for it, but besides that he got good rounds in. Even though it was 90 degrees in the ring, we felt he looked sharp and did what he wanted.

“He’ll now take a week off then begin a two week strength training program. Then it’s back to the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles to prepare for the next fight…either on September 24th or October 1st is what our promoter Don Chargin tells me, here in San Diego.

“Mercito is focused and on a mission to win the world title, for his hometown of Cebu, Philippines, as well as his adopted city of San Diego. He loves San Diego and wants to bring a world title fight here someday…hopefully against a great Mexican fighter here at Petco Park! Anyway, thank you and all of San Diego for your support of Mercito Gesta and his quest for the belt.” Signed, Vincent Parra: Co-manager/trainer on Team Gesta.

In last night’s co-main event,  jr. lightweight Adolfo “El Terror” Landeros (19-15-1, 9 KO’s), who was originally slated to face Michael Franco in the main event, was upset by Noe Lopez of Nogales, Mexico. Lopez, who is a southpaw, knocked Landeros down in round two and completely out-boxed him on his way to the one-sided eight round unanimous decision. The judges scored the bout 80-71, 79-72, and 79-72.

In his bout last year versus the formidable Dat Nguyen (left), Noe Lopez (right) was an aggressive sharp shooter who never missed an opportunity to land the heavy counter punch. Photo credit: Jim Wyatt

Lopez’s record (6-5-0, with 4 KO’s) might not impress you, but he sure gives everyone he faces a battle. As witnessed back on August 22, 2009 at the Pala Casino, there were quite a few fight fans, myself included, who believed he soundly defeated the exciting Dat Nguyen.
